چکیده

Internet-based online auctions provide unprecedented opportunities for sellers to submit shill bids. Shill bidding increases the seller’s expected utility but deceives buyers and damages auctioneers’ reputation. Because the anonymity of the Internet makes it difficult to catch shill bidders through statistical analysis or encryption, we suggest that the most effective approach is to make it uneconomical to conduct the fraud. To achieve it, we emphasize the essention role of an auctioneer in deterring fraud and design a Shill-Deterrent Fee Schedule (SDFS) for an auctioneer to discourage sellers from shill bidding. We analyze the seller’s optimal strategy under SDFS and what measures the auctioneer should take to ensure the proper implementation of SDFS. (JEL D44).

Shill bidding has increased substantially with the explosion in the number of online auctions. Shill-Proof Fee (SPF) Schedule: the Sunscreen against Seller Self-Collusion in Online English Auctions

Shill bidding in English auctions is the use of insincere bids on the seller’s behalf to artificially drive up the price of the listing. We show that in an independent private-value (IPV) English auction where there are heterogeneous bidders ...

Fee-for-Service Payment – An Evil Practice that Must be Stamped Out?

Co-opting physicians to regulate Fee-for-Service (FFS) payment is more feasible and simpler to administer than capitation, Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs) and pay-for-performance. The key lies in designing and revising the fee schedule, which not only defines and sets the fee for each item, but also the conditions of billing. Adherence to these regulations must be strictly audited in order to c...

However, despite the advantages there are many problems inherent in auctioning online. One such problem is shill bidding where spurious bids are introduced into an auction to drive up the final price for the s...

Shill Bidding in English Auctions

Shill bidding in English auction is the deliberate placing bids on the seller’s behalf to artificially drive up the price of his auctioned item. Shill bidding has been known to occur in auctions of high-value items like art and antiques where bidders’ valuations differ and the seller’s payoff from fraud is high. We prove that privatevalue English auctions with shill bidding can result in a high...
